Breaking Ground: Ice Age Island Day 1

This morning we were on site at 7.30 for radio interviews with the BBC to launch the excavation phase of our project. We have set up on the green in front of Mont Orgeuil with the mobile museum provided by Jersey Heritage decked out with ice age art drawn created by Jersey school children.

We laid out our first test pit by mid morning and began to excavate through the modern topsoil to test the depth of the Pleistocene sediment below. A find from the pretty beach of PetitImage Portelet beneath our site has strengthened our suspicion that artefacts are present offshore too. What remains to be seen is what lies within the deep loess (windblown silts) of the site.
